Why I started General-Forums.com

Blog entry posted by Brandon, Mar 29, 2010.

I've made a few blog post on my obsession with vBulletin and why I started this forum but I thought I would toss an updated version in our forum blogs.
As some of you may know, I had a niche webmaster forum that I sold in 2009, at that time I did have an IP.Board site up to play with and learn how it works. I later sold the IPB site because of my aforementioned obsession with vBulletin.

I was on the hunt for a forum to start, but I didn't want to narrow my topics like I had before. The only answer was a “general forum”, I know it's a tough TOUGH topic to cover but you'll never know unless you try. I was lucky enough to get a good domain name, I've never been fond of dashes but it works in this case. The other versions without dashes aren't really that big in my opinion. I know we're a bit small right now but I have a few sites setup to really add to our content, just waiting to get some work done so I have a little cash to work with.

At first I had thought about buying a copy of a large database, but that deal didn't work out right away and the longer I thought about it, I decided that I would just build the forum up piece by piece using 100% unique content. Buying the whole site, URL and database, pointing the URL to General-Forums.
I've picked up 5 forum at the time of this posting, I'm always on the hunt for a nice forum for under 500$ on Digitalpoint, let me know if you see one, all topics welcome ofcourse.

I'm going to use a newsletter program called constantcontant. We use it for our ThinkBigTopeka movement and it's been wonderful. I'll wait until we get a few large fish in here before setting up a newsletter and ofcouse, the spam will be to a minimum :D

I'm not looking to make money with General-Forums, I just want a fun forum that pays for itself. I haven't put any ads up on the site yet. We did have some up on the home page while what you see now was being built, but that was more or less just a placeholder and to see what ads would show. My last forum was all about websites, hosting and SEO so the ads where domains, hosting and services. I'm not 100% how well ads on a “general” site will do, something tells me that it won't be that good.

Well that's about it, do you guys have any questions?

Thanks as always for even checking this site out, I'm really looking forward to the site and the future of General-Forums.

Just an update. I'm not going to use contantcontact right now, I've gone with GAZ for our newsletter and will use it as long as I can.

Apology accepted, although I've never seen an approach like you had going..lol I know it isn't going to be easy, and I know it's not going to happen overnight, but I do know this forum will have a million post before I would ever consider selling it. That was always my goal on vbsetup, but a million post on a tight niche forum like vbulletin support is damn near impossible or it would take 10 years..lol Not all of our active users are vb users ;)
