My Nephew the Prude

Blog entry posted by Homebody, Jun 23, 2011.

I sometimes wonder where they get their ideas from. My youngest nephew is 8 years old, and has recently become obsessed with "bad words", that is, words he thinks should not be spoken of. This includes swear words, but is not limited to them. Any word having to do with sex (including the word sex), any body parts normally covered with clothing, any bathroom functions--these are all, to him, things that should never be alluded to in polite company.

The day before yesterday his mother was listening to a song with some suggestive lyrics in it.

"Mom," Alex asked, "Why are you listening to music that has words like "sex" and "ass" in it?" His mother, nonplussed, commented that she liked the song and it wasn't as if she was saying the words.

His reply: "Mom, listening to music with those words in it is just as if you'd said them yourself."

Makes you wonder who the parent is.

Thankful indeed, Scotty. A child like that is a kind of oasis in a world like the one we live in. What a commendable quality he has. I hope he retains it forever.

My 11 y/old son is similar in the fact he uses no foul language. Considering that I cuss like a sailor he is truly remarkable. He seems to have an extraordinary conscience guiding him. My wife and I stand in amazement sometimes at some of the things he does in school to help other children I guess we should be thankful for children that are well mannered rather than going off in the wrong direction in life...

Yeah, and believe me, they have this weird radar that zeros in on those words and all of a sudden they're using it with abandon, or asking ministers what it means, or yelling it out the car window during gridlock or something. The best advice I can give is treat it calmly, and do your living best not to let on in any way if it amuses you. Because then the word use is locked in for good.

I'm looking forward to my son talking more and more but I'm not looking forward to him learning words he shouldn't :p
