Electronic Cigarettes

Blog entry posted by Monster, Jan 10, 2012.

Since I'm probably going to try quit smoking using electronic cigarettes, I'll blog about it here, so it might be of use to someone.

Here's a comprehensive introductory video I found on the web about electronic cigarettes, their usage, etc.:

Intro to Vaping

I put it here for myself for future reference and other users who might be interested in it.

I'm really curious about that whole thing. I've ordered my first gear recently and I'm waiting for my package to arrive. :)

Currently, b/c of the low temperatures we had here, I'm smoking regular cigarettes. The electric has too much impact on my circulation, which is a problem when it's cold. I'm not used to that yet. Before that, I mixed real cigarettes and electric (b/c the withdrawals are too strong even with the electric). The print on the package of my electric says "not a smoking cessation aid" (which might be to avoid legal battles however). I'm resuming with the electric as soon as I can.

So how long has it been now since you've had a real cigarette? Or do you smoke them from time to time as well.

BTW, e-cigarette takes some getting used to. It took me a couple of weeks until I used it correctly. With the eGo-T (tank) model, it's important to draw very slowly at it (never draw hard), and to refill the tank it's a good idea to open the tank instead of just dripping liquid into its hole (to level out the air pressure inside the tank). It's also a good idea to use the tank until it's empty even if that reduces the life of the atomizer. Because that causes a dry burn that burns off stuff of the atomizer's wire spool. That way it's not really necessary to disassemble the atomizer to do the dry burn.

If you smoke only 1 pack a day, e-liquid with 8 mg/ml nicotine should be sufficient for you. Only try higher dosages if 8 mg isn't effective (and 16 mg which is considered "medium" should be the end of the line). I used to smoke more than 2 packs a day, and 16 mg turned out to be okay for me. Remember that nicotine is addictive, so be careful not to get yourself addicted to higher dosages. From 8 mg, you can get down to 4 mg and then to 0 mg after several weeks or months, depending on the strength of your addiction.

Then e-liquid of 8-16 mg/ml nicotine should be sufficient for you. Which e-cigarette system to use is another question. The video in comment (3) from 2010 says that nowadays, the tank models (Joyetech eGo-T, eGo-C or similar -- there are a lot of clones) are recommended, especially for new users. They do away with the so-called cartomizers (cartridge + atomizer) and cartridges. The eGo-T uses a combined tank/mouthpiece that holds the pure liquid and a separate atomizer. In the eGo-C, the atomizer can be further disassembled. But in principle, all electric cigarettes consist of some mouthpiece + container + atomizer + battery. The eGo-T / eGo-C have a very heavy battery that lasts for a day or two until in needs to be recharged.

    (4) The only issues I've come across so far is that since I replace some of the tobacco by the e-liquid (i.e. partly pure nicotine and other substances), I experience a different set of physical side effects. Especially the changes in circulation can be a bit surprising, but overall, I feel a bit happier and can do more things than before. But I'm using a PG-based liquid (polyethylene glycol) ... I'm going to try VG-based (vegetable glycol) or mixed as well, to see if circulation can be improved. My body is still used to getting tobacco round the clock, so it isn't surprising that there are some changes. I'm curious about the things to come! :)

    (3) Found another great video with more and updated information: http://www.vapetube.com/video/687/Intro-to-Vaping-2010 -- I've been using my e-cig for only a few days, and I've already smoked a lot less cigarettes. I used to smoke like 40-50 cigarettes a day, and now it's like 10-15 ... thanks to my electric cigarette!! :) -- I hope legislation will not eff this up for us. I'm glad that I discovered it now, perhaps it can help me quit smoking. I'm still using liquid with nicotine, but I hope someday I'll be able to go down to nicotine-free liquid.
